Gifted Testing 2026 School Year

Understanding Gifted Eligibility in Sarasota County: What Parents Need to Know

Each year, families begin preparing for the gifted testing process in Sarasota County Schools, and understanding the updated criteria can make all the difference. At Fundamental Psychology, we’re proud to be your trusted provider for private gifted evaluations in Sarasota, with reports that integrate directly into school eligibility meetings.

If you’re considering gifted testing or applying to a gifted magnet program such as Pine View School, it’s important to be aware of the key dates and steps in the process.

The deadline to request gifted screening or evaluation for gifted magnet programs is January 16, 2026. If you plan to pursue a private evaluation, you’ll need to notify your child’s school by  March 27, 2026. This allows the school time to complete required forms such as the gifted rating scales. All documents including private evaluations and supplemental materials must be submitted to the district by April 10, 2026.

The Gifted Identification Process in Sarasota County

A referral for gifted testing can be initiated by a teacher or parent. From there, students either complete a school-based screener through the school psychologist or undergo a private gifted evaluation with a licensed psychologist, such as those offered at Fundamental Psychology.

Gifted eligibility is determined by three key components:

  1. Standardized Test of Intelligence

Parents may choose to have an IQ test completed privately or through their districted school.

  • For children under age seven, results must be current within one year.
  • For children age seven and older, results must be current within three years.
  1. Gifted Rating Scales

Completed by your child’s classroom teacher, these forms provide valuable insight into classroom behavior, motivation, and advanced learning traits.

  1. Evidence of Need for Gifted Services

Students must show consistent above-grade-level performance across the core curriculum. This includes:

  • Report cards and academic records
  • Scores from state and district testing
  • Results from individual achievement testing
  • A review of social and emotional needs
  • Scores from the gifted characteristics scales

Report Card Requirements:

  • Grades must be unweighted for English/Language Arts and Math.
  • The report card must include four grading periods, with at least two consecutive periods from the current school year.

Please note: Gifted eligibility must be confirmed before the application to a Sarasota gifted magnet program can begin.

Additional Criteria for Gifted Magnet Programs

For admission into gifted magnet programs or cluster sites—such as Pine View School, Fruitville Elementary, Booker Middle, Sarasota Middle, Venice Elementary, Laurel Nokomis School, Toledo Blade Elementary, and Woodland Middle- students must meet both IQ and academic achievement requirements.

  1. Individual Academic Achievement Testing:
    • Required in English/Language Arts and Math.
    • Academic assessments must be current within one year.
  2. FAST Option for Grades 4–8:
    • Students may use the Florida Assessment of Student Thinking (FAST) instead of private academic testing if they earned a Level 5 in both Math and Reading on their most recent end-of-year assessment (PM3). (Of note though, the max number of points you can earn on the counties matrix is higher with private academic testing but may not be needed if the student has all A’s.
